Zéphyr 1008 - Oyster Perpetual

La Zephyr fait partie de ces Rolex que presque tout le monde trouve belle avant même de savoir ce que c’est.

Ce qui est déjà un assez bon début.

Apparue dans les années 1950, elle occupe une place un peu à part dans la famille Oyster Perpetual. La référence 1008 que nous présentons ici possède ce qui fait tout le charme du modèle : un boîtier de 34 mm, une fine lunette en or jaune profondément texturée et surtout ce cadran argenté traversé par deux lignes formant une croix parfaite.

Une idée extrêmement simple, mais suffisamment forte pour donner immédiatement une identité à la montre.

Datée de 1965, cette Zephyr est animée par le calibre automatique Rolex 1560 et conserve sa très belle configuration bicolore, avec bracelet Oyster en acier et or assorti.

Et puis il y a son histoire avec l’automobile.

Dans les années 1960, Rolex entretient déjà des liens étroits avec les courses américaines et la Zephyr apparaît au poignet de figures du NASCAR. Junior Johnson, légende de la discipline et vainqueur du Daytona 500 en 1960, a notamment été photographié portant une Zephyr quelques années plus tard.

Ce qui est assez amusant quand on regarde la montre.

Avec ses 34 mm, son cadran argenté presque minimaliste et sa petite lunette dorée, elle n’a franchement pas l’air d’une montre de pilote automobile.

Et c’est peut-être précisément pour cela qu’elle est si réussie.

Une Rolex élégante, un peu étrange, rarement croisée et avec beaucoup plus d’histoire qu’elle ne le laisse entendre.

Bref, une montre qui va vite sans avoir besoin d’en avoir l’air.

The Zephyr is one of those Rolex watches that almost everyone finds beautiful before they even know what it is.

Which is already a rather good start.

Introduced in the 1950s, the Zephyr occupies a slightly unusual place within the Oyster Perpetual family. This reference 1008 has all the details that give the model its distinctive charm: a 34 mm case, a finely textured yellow-gold bezel and, above all, a silvered dial crossed by two perfectly straight lines.

An extremely simple idea, yet enough to give the watch an identity of its own.

Dating from 1965, this Zephyr is powered by Rolex’s automatic calibre 1560 and retains its handsome two-tone configuration with a matching steel-and-gold Oyster bracelet.

And then there is its connection with motor racing.

By the 1960s, Rolex already had close ties to American motorsport, and the Zephyr appeared on the wrists of figures from NASCAR. Junior Johnson, one of the sport’s great legends and winner of the 1960 Daytona 500, was photographed wearing what appears to be a Zephyr a few years later.

Which is rather amusing when you look at the watch.

At 34 mm, with its restrained silver dial and delicate gold bezel, it hardly looks like a racing driver’s watch.

And perhaps that is exactly why it works so well.

Elegant, slightly eccentric, rarely seen, and carrying far more history than its appearance suggests.

In short, a watch that goes fast without needing to look like it does.
