Rolex Submariner Réf. 5512 Meter First

€22,000 EUR

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner référence 5512 en acier, cadran noir mat « Meters First », quatre lignes, circa 1968.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner reference 5512 in stainless steel, with matte black four-line “Meters First” dial, circa 1968.

There are rare Submariners. And then there are those that simply have everything one wants to see in a great vintage Submariner.

This one belongs to the second category.

Reference 5512 holds a particular place in Submariner history. Unlike the 5513, it was chronometer-certified, something immediately recognizable from the four lines of text above six o’clock, including “Superlative Chronometer” and “Officially Certified.”

A detail that may seem almost ordinary today.

In the late 1960s, it certainly was not.

The matte black dial is presented here in the coveted “Meters First” configuration, with the depth rating showing 200 m before 660 ft. This layout belongs to the earlier generation of matte dials, before Rolex gradually moved toward the later “Feet First” format.

And then there is Steve McQueen.

For years, his name was attached to the Explorer II reference 1655, despite the lack of convincing photographic evidence that he actually wore one. What McQueen was very clearly photographed wearing, however, was a Submariner 5512.

Which, let’s admit, is already more than enough coolness for one watch.

But this 5512 does not really need Steve McQueen. Its matte dial, four-line chronometer text, Meters First configuration and beautifully aged luminous material already tell the story of one of the most important transitional periods in Submariner history.

No date. No colour. No unnecessary complication.

And somehow, very little left to ask for.
