Rolex Ovettone Ref.6605 "Amtlich Gepfrüft"

€35,000 EUR

This 1950s yellow gold Rolex Ovettone is an exceptionally unusual watch, especially because of its rare German-language dial.

Reference 6605 belongs to the early generations of the Datejust and still retains the generous proportions and rounded caseback associated with the models collectors nickname “Ovettone.” With its 36 mm yellow gold case and fluted bezel, it already displays the design codes that would define the Datejust for decades.

What really makes this watch stand out, however, is its dial. While most Rolex watches from this period carry inscriptions in English or French, this example displays its chronometer certification in German: “Superlativer Chronometer – Amtlich Geprüft.”

The inscription indicates that the watch was officially tested and certified as a chronometer. It is an extremely rare configuration and a fascinating reminder of how Rolex adapted certain dials for specific markets during the 1950s.

This watch has been part of our stock and collection for fifteen years. It is the first time we are offering it for sale, having kept it for so long precisely because of its unusual character.

With its yellow gold case, German-language dial, and early Ovettone architecture, this Datejust brings together a combination that has become exceptionally difficult to find today.

A historic, original, and highly distinctive Datejust for a collector looking for something genuinely different.
