A Day-Date is rarely a discreet watch. This one, however, decided to give it a try.
White gold gives it an almost understated elegance that yellow gold never particularly cared about. And then there is the dial: mother-of-pearl shifting between pink, green and grey, punctuated by diamond hour markers and constantly changing with the light.
Dating from 1988, this reference 18039 comes from a generation of Day-Date watches in which Rolex knew exactly how to mix classicism with extravagance. The 36 mm case and fluted bezel are unmistakably Day-Date; the dial does everything else.
That contrast is precisely what makes the watch so appealing. From a distance, a white-gold Day-Date, almost restrained. Up close, mother-of-pearl, diamonds and considerably less restraint.
It is now fitted with a brown leather strap, which tones things down just enough and leaves the dial to take centre stage.
An elegant and precious Rolex, without ever feeling heavy.
Because, after all, if you choose to wear a white-gold Day-Date with a mother-of-pearl and diamond dial, there is little point pretending you were trying to go unnoticed.
