Rolex Datejust Réf. 1601 "Beyeler Two-Tone Blue Dial"

€35.000 EUR

This steel Rolex Datejust is an exceptional prototype, both for its dial and its historical significance. The two-tone dial shown here was never commercially released and is one of a series of prototypes made by BLL (Beyeler / Beyeler-Luthy-Leonard), one of the rarest Swiss dial makers used by Rolex, particularly for the Datejust.

These experimental dials were developed for the Japanese market, where Rolex was testing bolder aesthetics at the time. They are recognizable by their luminous dots, applied to assess legibility and reception under real-world conditions. Very few examples are known to exist today; another two-tone gray dial of similar design is held in a private collection in Japan.

The finishing work on this dial is remarkable: a granulated painted border contrasts subtly with a satin-finished center, creating a rare visual depth and a particularly refined presence on the wrist. This combination of textures testifies to the high level of aesthetic research that Rolex conducted through its prototypes.

The watch has been completely disassembled and inspected, and is presented in strictly original condition, without any modifications or component replacements. It is therefore a unique Datejust, both a collector's item and a direct testament to Rolex's internal development process.

It should be noted that, while Singer dial prototypes are already extremely rare, BLL prototypes, and even more so those intended for the Day-Just, are among the most exclusive and sought-after pieces in the brand's history.
