Legend Rolex Explorer from 1952 "Dr. Gabriel Chevalley"

Price on request

This Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6098 is one of those rare watches whose history goes far beyond the object itself.

It belonged to Dr. Gabriel Chevalley, physician on both Swiss Everest expeditions of 1952 and leader of the autumn expedition. These historic attempts took place only months before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit in 1953 and played an important role in understanding the routes and extreme high-altitude conditions of Everest.

Rolex was directly involved in these expeditions, supplying several watches to be tested under extreme conditions. Gabriel Chevalley wore two Rolex watches during the expedition, both of which were later returned to the manufacture as originally agreed.

In 1953, Rolex presented him with this reference 6098 in recognition of his participation. The original Rolex letter accompanying the watch confirms both the return of the two watches used on Everest and the gift of this example to Dr. Chevalley.

Its provenance is exceptional. The watch is accompanied by an extraordinary archive of documents and personal objects connected to the 1952 expeditions, including photographs, maps, correspondence, period press clippings, climbing equipment, and other historical material relating directly to Gabriel Chevalley and Everest.

Reference 6098 also holds an important place in Rolex history. Today regarded as one of the pre-Explorer references, it belongs to the generation of Oyster Perpetual watches used during major expeditions that directly contributed to the creation of the Explorer in 1953.

Far more than a vintage Rolex, this watch is a genuine piece of mountaineering history and a remarkable witness to the early relationship between Rolex and exploration.
