Here is a Jaeger-LeCoultre, a genuine 1940s pilot's watch in rose gold and steel. These are very special watches, designed to be worn on the side of the wrist. The goal was for the driver to be able to read the time without taking their hands off the wheel, keeping their hand firmly in place.
This type of watch is found in very few brands. There are examples from Cartier, Patek Philippe, and Jaeger-LeCoultre. A few other houses have also made them, but they are always exceptional watches, with a real personality and genuine appeal.
This particular example comes from the collection of a very prominent collector of automotive watches. I kept it for about ten years. Since then, I've sold the Patek, I've sold the Cartier, and I still have this Jaeger-LeCoultre. Honestly, it's probably the most exclusive of the three, and personally, I find it almost more beautiful than the Patek.
The rose gold and black dial combination is superb, with a strong presence on the wrist. The watch is entirely original; nothing has been altered or restored. It's a very sound, coherent, and truly magnificent piece.
For me, this is an important watch, as much for its design as for its function, and for what it represents in the history of pilot's watches.
Voici une Jaeger-LeCoultre, une vraie montre de pilote des années 40, en or rose et acier. Ce sont des montres très particulières, faites pour être portées sur le flanc du poignet. Le but était que le pilote puisse lire l’heure sans lâcher le volant, en gardant la main bien en place.
On retrouve ce type de montre chez très peu de marques. Il y a des exemples chez Cartier, chez Patek Philippe, et chez Jaeger-LeCoultre. Quelques autres maisons en ont fait aussi, mais ce sont toujours des montres à part, avec une vraie personnalité et un vrai intérêt.
Cet exemplaire vient de la collection d’un très grand collectionneur de montres automobiles. Je l’ai gardée pendant une dizaine d’années. Depuis, j’ai vendu la Patek, j’ai vendu la Cartier, et il me reste cette Jaeger-LeCoultre. Honnêtement, c’est sans doute la plus exclusive des trois, et à titre personnel, je la trouve presque plus belle que la Patek.
La combinaison or rose et cadran noir est superbe, avec beaucoup de présence au poignet. La montre est entièrement d’origine, rien n’a été modifié ou repris. C’est une pièce très saine, très cohérente, et vraiment magnifique.
Pour moi, c’est une montre importante, autant par son design que par son usage, et par ce qu’elle représente dans l’histoire des montres de pilote.
