Day-Date Oman Wood Dial Ref. 18038

€90,000 EUR

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date reference 18038 in 18k yellow gold, featuring a briar-root wood dial with the green Khanjar emblem of the Sultanate of Oman.

The Day-Date is probably one of the most fascinating Rolex models to collect. From the beginning, it became a symbol of power, but it also gave Rolex the perfect canvas for some of its most confidential creations: unusual dials, special commissions and configurations that were certainly not sitting in every dealer’s window.

This reference 18038 is a rather spectacular example.

Its dial is made from briar-root wood, a natural material whose grain makes every dial inherently unique. At six o’clock sits the green Khanjar emblem of the Sultanate of Oman, one of the most coveted symbols among collectors of Middle Eastern Rolex watches.

As if a wooden dial on a solid-gold Day-Date were not already discreet enough.

But this particular watch has something more.

It is the very example published on pages 280–281 of Pucci Papaleo’s DAY-DATE, The Presidential Rolex, one of the key reference books devoted to the model. Its documented appearance in the book elevates it from an exceptionally rare configuration to a specifically recorded and recognized example.

Dating from 1987, it combines a 36 mm 18k yellow-gold case with its matching President bracelet and Rolex automatic calibre 3055. The watch is remarkably well preserved, retaining sharply defined case lines and even its original case-back sticker.

A gold Day-Date, a wooden dial, a green Khanjar and a starring role in one of the definitive books on the model.

At some point, calling this watch “understated” would simply become dishonest.
