Datejust UAE

€15,000 EUR

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust reference 16013 in stainless steel and yellow gold, featuring the former national emblem of the United Arab Emirates on its champagne dial.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rolex produced a number of specially commissioned watches for governments, institutions and armed forces throughout the Gulf. Oman may now be the most famous example thanks to its Khanjar watches, but the United Arab Emirates also left some remarkable traces in Rolex history.

Here is one of them.

Set prominently on the champagne dial is the former UAE national emblem, the celebrated “Quraysh Hawk.” Watches of this kind were generally presented to dignitaries, officers and selected recipients, serving as much as symbols of recognition as they did as watches.

Which may explain why nobody involved seems to have been particularly interested in discretion.

Reference 16013 combines a 36 mm stainless-steel case, yellow-gold fluted bezel and two-tone Jubilee bracelet. In other words, a perfectly classic Datejust.

Well, almost.

Once you put a national eagle in the middle of the dial, the word “classic” becomes somewhat relative.

This example is particularly appealing for its state of preservation. The dial, case and bracelet retain a remarkable presence, giving the watch the overall coherence collectors look for in government-logo Rolex watches.

Middle Eastern Day-Date watches may be the best known, but Datejust examples appear considerably less often and have something even more unexpected about them: an everyday Rolex transformed into an official presentation piece.

Steel and gold, a UAE eagle on the dial, and just the right amount of excess.

Diplomacy, after all, never required anyone to be understated.
