Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust reference 16018 in 18k yellow gold, featuring the emblem of the United Arab Emirates forces on its champagne dial.

From the 1970s onwards, Rolex became much more than a watch in the Gulf States. Certain pieces were specially commissioned for governments, institutions and military forces, and subsequently presented to officers, dignitaries and selected recipients.

This Datejust belongs to that remarkable history.

At the centre of its champagne dial sits the UAE forces emblem: a golden falcon, the national flag and seven stars representing the seven emirates of the federation. Comparable UAE military Rolex dials are well documented by the major auction houses.

In other words, this was not exactly the Datejust one picked up casually from a dealer’s window.

Reference 16018 is already one of the more luxurious interpretations of the Datejust: a 36 mm case entirely crafted from 18k yellow gold, a fluted bezel and a matching gold Jubilee bracelet. Inside sits Rolex’s automatic calibre 3035.

And just in case all that gold risked going unnoticed, someone put a military emblem in the middle of the dial.

What makes this particular example especially appealing is its state of preservation. The case retains a beautiful presence, the champagne dial remains remarkably clean and the full-gold bracelet completes the watch exactly as it should.

Middle Eastern military and government-signed Rolex watches now occupy a category of their own among vintage collectors. They combine an already desirable Rolex configuration with a history that could only have emerged from a very particular time and place.

A solid-gold Datejust bearing the UAE Air Force emblem.

At this point, understatement was clearly not part of the specifications.
