Cartier "Santos Dumont" from 1913

€18.500 EUR

A true museum piece, this 1913 Cartier Santos is among the very first watches ever produced by Cartier. It marks the beginning of the legend and one of the founding moments of modern watchmaking.

The story begins a few years earlier, when aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, a friend of Louis Cartier, expressed a very simple problem: in flight, he no longer wanted to use a pocket watch, which was too impractical and dangerous to handle in a cockpit. Louis Cartier then envisioned for him a legible, elegant, and perfectly functional wristwatch. Thus was born the Santos, one of the very first men's wristwatches ever designed.

This 1913 example belongs to the very first productions that followed this visionary creation. It is a men's watch, admittedly modest by today's standards, but perfectly balanced on the wrist. It is absolutely complete, entirely original, with its European Watch movement and period dial, which is exceptional for a piece of this age.

We're talking about a watch that's over 110 years old, almost 115, yet remains strikingly timeless. The design is pure, the elegance undeniable, and its presence on the wrist is just as perfect today as it was at the beginning of the 20th century.

The price is more than reasonable considering its historical significance, its condition, and its complete authenticity. It's a foundational watch, a key object in Cartier's history, rare, entirely original, and profoundly iconic.
