The Rolex Daytona Paul Newman Ref. 6263

The Daytona Paul Newman is the most iconic watch of the watch market. It was the same model worn by the famous american actor Paul Newman, as a gift from his wife, that fetched 17 millions dollars in auction and completel changed the vintage watch and art sector.

What is a Paul Newman dial ?

Those “Paul Newman” Daytonas got their nickname because of their exotic dials, made by Singer and recognizable at first glance with small boxes in the registers and a very particular “Art-Deco” typography for better readability. These dial made their reputation, as they were built in very small quantities by Rolex and remain incredibly rare to find.

Those dials were made on demand of Rolex, who needed “special” chronograph dials to boost their sales and divert from their racing image, as the racing image was - ironically - not very popular.

The one we show today is probably one of the rarest, most sought-after examples :

This Rolex Daytona Paul Newman Mk2 is no more no less than the last version of the “panda” dial, called this way because of the white dial with three black sub-counters. This watch was only produced in 1972, and bears a “Mk2” Ghost Writing dial.

Rolex really experimented the Paul Newman Oysters with the launch of the waterproof reference 6263 : In all its dial variations, they transformed the “Non-Oyster” panda dials in “Oyster” dials, which is where the Ghost Writing name comes from.

This superb example is matching and comes in perfect condition, with a lume plots, pushers, dial, bracelet and everything straight from factory.
